Tain is a small, historic burgh on the southern shore of the Dornoch Firth in Easter Ross, within the Highland council area of Scotland. The town grew up around the medieval shrine of St Duthac and long-standing royal burgh status, and its compact high street still shows red sandstone buildings, a local museum and a sense of layered history from pilgrimage to coastal trade.
Today Tain combines community life with tourism and industry: the famous Glenmorangie distillery is based here, agriculture remains important in the surrounding countryside, and the town has a station on the Far North Line linking it to Inverness. Its proximity to wildlife-rich shores, nearby Tarbat Ness and golf at Dornoch make it a popular base for visitors while local festivals and markets keep a strong social buzz.
