Cromarty is a small, tightly knit town standing on the tip of the Black Isle in the Highland council area, at the entrance to the Cromarty Firth where it meets the Moray Firth, roughly twenty miles from Inverness. The deep, sheltered firth has long shaped the town’s character: it’s an important marine and anchorage area, supports oil‑and‑gas and shipping services, and the coast and estuary are rich in wildlife, with seals, seabirds and sightings of the Moray Firth dolphins not far away.
The town itself is notable for a compact, well‑preserved Georgian streetscape, a historic harbour and a strong sense of community. Once a busy fishing and trading port, Cromarty today attracts visitors for birdwatching, walking and local festivals, while small museums, craft enterprises and the continuing marine economy keep a blend of heritage and contemporary life in evidence.
