Inverclyde

Council area in Scotland

Coordinates:55.9, -4.75
OS grid ref:NS 28 71

Inverclyde sits on the south bank of the River Clyde where it opens into the Firth of Clyde, a compact council area that includes towns such as Greenock, Gourock, Port Glasgow, Wemyss Bay and Kilmacolm. The coastline is interlaced with promenades, ferry slips and scenic walks - the Victorian-era Greenock Cut and the regular sailings from Wemyss Bay to the Isle of Bute are particular draws for walkers and day-trippers.

Historically the area prospered from shipbuilding, transatlantic trade and the wealth of 18th–19th century mercantile families, leaving a strong maritime heritage visible in the architecture and museums of Greenock and Port Glasgow. The late 20th-century decline of heavy industry brought economic and social challenges, and recent regeneration has focused on services, tourism, renewables and improved links with Glasgow. Despite pockets of deprivation, the area maintains a lively local culture with sailing, festivals, community arts and outdoor recreation centred on its coastal setting.
