Quarrier's Village in the council area of Inverclyde was established in the late 19th century by philanthropist William Quarrier as the Orphan Homes of Scotland. Its model‑village plan of red‑stone cottages, church, school and workshops set in parkland gives it a distinctive, almost collegiate character and it is now a designated conservation area surrounded by quiet rural lanes.
Its social history is notable: many children from industrial Glasgow were cared for there and some were later sent overseas as part of the British Home Children movement to places such as Canada. The Quarriers charity continues to operate today and several original buildings have been adapted for modern housing and community use, so the village blends lived‑in heritage with ongoing social care links.
