Port Glasgow is a town in Inverclyde, Scotland, sitting on the south bank of the River Clyde. It grew up in the 17th–19th centuries as the seaward port for Glasgow when larger vessels could no longer reach the city, and its waterfront and docks still reflect that shipbuilding and maritime past; the riverside Newark Castle is a striking historic landmark.
After the decline of heavy industry in the late 20th century the town became more residential and commuter‑oriented, with rail links into Glasgow and neighbouring Greenock, while local regeneration projects and community groups keep the maritime heritage and culture alive alongside modern housing and services. Socially it’s a compact community with a strong local identity rooted in its industrial history and riverside setting.
