Greenock is a waterfront town in Inverclyde on the south bank of the River Clyde, where the river broadens into the Firth of Clyde. Its steep Victorian streets, historic harbour and industrial skyline recall a 19th‑century boom in shipbuilding, sugar refining and transatlantic traffic, and the nearby engineered reservoir trail of the Greenock Cut is a much‑loved local walking route with wide estuary views.
Since the decline of heavy industry the town has faced economic challenges but seen pockets of regeneration around the Ocean Terminal cruise and freight facilities, arts venues and community projects; local identity and social life remain strong - Greenock Morton football is a focus of pride, and the town still acts as a coastal gateway to nearby Gourock and the islands of the Clyde.
