The council area of Perth and Kinross lies in central and eastern Scotland, running from the low-lying farmland and market town of Perth into highland glens and mountains. The landscape is shaped by the great River Tay, large lochs such as Loch Tay, and sweeping straths and hills that give a strong sense of transition between lowland and Highland country.
There’s a rich historic and cultural fabric: Scone Palace near Perth was the traditional crowning place of Scottish kings, while towns like Pitlochry, Crieff, Blairgowrie and Kinross host festivals, Highland games and theatres. The area is also known for whisky distilleries, estate houses and longstanding rural traditions that attract visitors and sustain local identity.
Economically the region combines agriculture - fruit and cereal production in Strathmore and hill farming - with tourism, renewable energy and fisheries, notably salmon fishing on the River Tay. The population is spread between historic market towns and remote communities, and outdoor pursuits from walking and cycling to fishing and winter sports in the nearby Cairngorms National Park are central to both daily life and the visitor economy.
