Milnathort is a small town in Perth and Kinross, set just north of Loch Leven and beneath the rise of the Ochil Hills. Its position gives easy access to the loch and the RSPB reserve, making it handy for birdwatching and waterside walks, and it sits close to Loch Leven Castle, famous as the place where Mary, Queen of Scots was briefly held. The nearby market town of Kinross and the surrounding farmland shape the town’s pleasantly rural setting.
Milnathort has a quiet, community-focused character: historically it developed as a local service and market centre and today supports shops, a primary school and the local secondary school serving the Kinross-shire area, together with a community hall and active local clubs. Economically many residents work in agriculture, tourism or commute to larger centres such as Perth and Edinburgh, while local events and volunteer groups keep village life fairly lively for a town of its size.
