Renfrewshire

Council area in Scotland

Coordinates:55.85, -4.51
OS grid ref:NS 42 64

Renfrewshire sits on the southern bank of the River Clyde in west‑central Scotland, immediately west of Glasgow. Its principal town is Paisley, with other settlements such as Renfrew, Johnstone, Bishopton and Inchinnan, and it includes Glasgow Airport, making it an important transport and commuter area.

The area has a strong industrial and cultural heritage: Paisley was a centre of weaving and thread production and gave its name to the famous Paisley pattern, while Paisley Abbey and the royal burgh of Renfrew reflect older civic history. Today the economy mixes manufacturing, aerospace and logistics with growing service and education sectors (notably the University of the West of Scotland campus in Paisley), and there are notable green spaces such as Castle Semple Country Park at Lochwinnoch and parts of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park for outdoor recreation.
