The island of Bressay sits just east of Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, separated from the mainland by Bressay Sound. Its shoreline mixes sandy bays, rocky headlands and steep cliffs, making it important for seabirds; the nearby Noss is a noted bird reserve and seals and otters are often seen around the coast.
Home to a small, close-knit community, Bressay retains a strong maritime and crofting heritage: people commute by ferry to Lerwick while local livelihoods include fishing, aquaculture and small-scale farming. Visitors can spot 19th- and 20th-century maritime infrastructure - lighthouses, harbours and wartime remnants - alongside active community projects and traditional Shetland cultural life such as knitting and seasonal gatherings.
