The island of Trondra sits off the west coast of the Mainland in the Shetland Islands, lying close to Scalloway. It’s small and low-lying, with a mix of rocky shoreline, sheltered bays and improved pasture; a short road bridge links it to the Mainland so the island feels very much part of day-to-day island life rather than remote.
Local life is centred on crofting, small-scale fishing and commuting to nearby centres, and the community retains many familiar Shetland traditions and social ties. The coastline and surrounding sounds are popular for coastal walking and birdwatching, and the island’s place-names and landscape reflect the long Norse and crofting history of the archipelago.
