The low-lying island of West Burra sits in the southern part of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. It is linked by causeways and small bridges to neighbouring Trondra and thence to the Mainland, and offers a mix of rocky shoreline and sandy bays, a sheltered harbour at Hamnavoe and plenty of seabirds and seals for nature-watchers.
Locally it’s a quiet, close-knit crofting and fishing community with a strong Norse-influenced history; the economy blends traditional crofting and inshore fishing with aquaculture and a modest amount of seasonal tourism, while walking, boat trips and community events keep island life lively.
