Lerwick is the main town and administrative centre of the Shetland Islands in Scotland, sitting on the east coast of Mainland, Shetland with a sheltered harbour looking across Bressay Sound to the island of Bressay. It grew from a 17th–18th century fishing and trading port and still shows compact stone-built streets, the Shetland Museum and Archives and a strong Norse heritage celebrated each January in the fiery Up Helly Aa guizer festival.
The town is a practical maritime hub - commercial fishing and aquaculture, shipyards and offshore energy services sit alongside growing tourism, regular ferry and cruise calls, and a lively local scene of music, knitwear traditions and outdoor pursuits such as birdwatching and coastal walking in a characteristically cool, windy maritime climate.
