Blaenau Gwent is a compact unitary authority in south‑east Wales, occupying a stretch of the steep, post‑industrial South Wales Valleys. Its principal towns, notably Ebbw Vale and Tredegar, sit in narrow valleys cut through upland moorland, giving the area a rugged, scenic character despite its industrial scars.
Historically the area was shaped by coal, iron and steel – industries that powered Britain's growth but left a heavy legacy of decline in the 20th century. That past also forged a strong trade‑union and community identity (Tredegar is famous as the home of Aneurin Bevan, a key founder of the NHS), and recent years have seen focused regeneration: cultural projects, outdoor recreation and town‑centre renewals aim to diversify the local economy while celebrating the valley communities and their history. Socially it remains a close‑knit area with a distinctive local culture and resilient civic life.
