Blaina is a small former industrial town in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent in south‑eastern Wales, set in the wooded slopes of the Sirhowy Valley and one of the communities of the South Wales Valleys, close to Ebbw Vale. Its compact streets and terraces sit in a narrow valley, giving easy access to local walking routes and views over the valley floor.
The town grew up in the 19th century around ironworking and coal mining, and that industrial heritage still shapes its character: chapels, miners’ institutes and a strong sense of community remain important. Like many valley towns, Blaina suffered economic decline after pit closures but has seen local regeneration and retains active social life through clubs, community projects and events that celebrate its working‑class history.
