Aberbargoed is a small former colliery village in the western part of the Rhymney Valley, within the county borough of Caerphilly in south-east Wales. It sits close to neighbouring towns such as Bargoed and is notable for the Aberbargoed Grasslands national nature reserve - a rare area of lowland acid grassland and reclaimed colliery land that supports skylarks and other wildlife and gives a surprising green edge to an otherwise post‑industrial landscape.
Historically the village grew with the coal industry and, like many South Wales Valleys communities, suffered economic and social challenges after pit closures in the 20th century. Recent decades have seen pockets of regeneration, community initiatives and new housing alongside reminders of its mining past; the local identity remains strongly rooted in working‑class heritage and close‑knit neighbourhood life.
