Caerphilly sits on the southern edge of the South Wales Valleys, a short commute north of Cardiff, and is dominated by the vast moated curtain walls of Caerphilly Castle, one of Britain’s largest medieval fortresses. The town is also famous as the birthplace of Caerphilly cheese and stages lively food and cultural events around the castle and the riverside by the River Rhymney.
Historically a coal and iron-working community, Caerphilly has shifted towards retail, light industry and commuter housing while preserving much Victorian and industrial heritage through regeneration schemes; local life centres on community festivals, sports clubs and parkland. There remains a visible Welsh identity and growing bilingualism alongside new housing and business parks that reflect the town’s transition from a mining past to a diverse, outward-looking suburban centre.
