Newchurch and Merthyr sits in rural Carmarthenshire in Wales, set among rolling farmland, hedgerows and small clusters of stone cottages and farmsteads. The settlements owe their names to an historic church at Newchurch and the adjoining Merthyr community, and the built environment still shows traces of 19th‑century chapels and traditional farm buildings that give the area a quietly historic, agricultural feel.
Life here is shaped by farming and village‑scale social life, with a strong local identity and a continuing presence of the Welsh language; community activities tend to revolve around village halls, chapels and agricultural events. While the economy remains largely agricultural, many residents also commute to larger market towns for work, so the area combines a traditional rural character with connections to wider Carmarthenshire life.
