Carmarthen is the county town of Carmarthenshire in south‑west Wales, lying on the banks of the River Towy. It prides itself on being one of the oldest towns in the country, with Roman and medieval roots visible in the street plan and castle remains, and local legend linking the area to the figure of Merlin.
Today Carmarthen functions as an administrative and market centre, with a mix of independent shops, public‑sector employment and a lively arts and music scene; its Georgian streets, regular market and proximity to attractive countryside and the coast make it a social and commercial hub for the county. The town also has a strong bilingual character, reflecting the continuing importance of the Welsh language locally.
