Located on the northern shore of the Burry Inlet in Carmarthenshire, Llanelli looks out over Swansea Bay and has been transformed by the stretch of reclaimed coastline known as the Millennium Coastal Park, with views across to the Gower. The estuary’s mudflats are important for wading birds, so the waterfront blends wildlife interest with leisure trails, cycling and coastal walks.
Once a powerhouse of tinplate and coal export, Llanelli still wears its industrial past alongside a strong cultural identity - Welsh is widely spoken and rugby plays a big social role through Llanelli RFC and regional side The Scarlets at Parc y Scarlets. The town has seen ongoing regeneration with light industry, retail and tourism growth; colourful local touches include Felinfoel Brewery (among the first in Britain to can beer) and nearby harbours such as Burry Port that hint at its maritime history.
