The community of Blaenrheidol lies high in upland Ceredigion in mid-Wales, occupying moorland and steep valleys on the flanks of Plynlimon where the headwaters of the River Rheidol begin. The scenery is dominated by heather and peatland, scattered farms and conifer plantations, with reservoirs such as Nant-y-moch punctuating the valley and offering long views across the Cambrian uplands.
It is a sparsely populated, agricultural landscape where sheep farming, forestry and a modest outdoor‑tourism trade sustain the local economy; mid‑20th century hydro schemes altered parts of the valley and there are also upland archaeological remains and old droving routes. Community life is small‑scale but lively, with a strong Welsh linguistic and cultural presence anchoring the scattered hamlets and farmsteads.
