Maentwrog sits in the wooded Vale of Ffestiniog in Gwynedd, Wales, tucked beneath the Moelwyn Mountains and alongside the River Dwyryd. Its setting gives easy access to walks and dramatic scenery on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, with close links to nearby slate towns such as Blaenau Ffestiniog and reservoirs like Llyn Trawsfynydd.
The village has a strong local identity shaped by slate-working, hydropower and rural life: the Maentwrog hydroelectric works and the nearby, now former, Trawsfynydd nuclear station have been notable employers, while tourism, small farms and heritage draw visitors. Culturally it’s known for the old parish church of St Twrog, with the legendary "Maen Twrog" stone said to be linked to the saint, and a close-knit community that balances conservation, outdoor recreation and local traditions.
