Penrhyndeudraeth is a small riverside town in Gwynedd, Wales, lying at the mouth of the Afon Dwyryd estuary between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog. Its setting of tidal marshes and nearby hills on the edge of Snowdonia makes it convenient for walking and birdwatching, and it’s a handy base for visiting the Italianate village of Portmeirion and the wider coastal and slate-country attractions.
The town expanded in the 19th century with the growth of the slate industry and transport links, and today combines local services, light industry and tourism. It retains a strong Welsh-speaking community, visible in chapels, clubs and local events, and many residents take pride in the area’s industrial heritage while commuting or working in nearby towns.
