The parish of Ffestiniog sits in upland Gwynedd in northern Wales, on the edge of Snowdonia. It is characterised by steep, glaciated valleys, scattered farming hamlets and the dramatic scars of slate quarries that shape the local skyline and countryside.
Historically the area was at the heart of the Welsh slate industry and close links to Blaenau Ffestiniog and the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway helped move slate to the coast at Porthmadog. Today tourism and outdoor recreation sit alongside small-scale farming and a strong Welsh-language community, with active efforts to conserve both natural uplands and industrial heritage.
