Bowydd a'r Rhiw sits on the fringe of Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd, set among the rugged, slate-strewn hills that characterise this part of Snowdonia. The landscape is marked by disused quarries and industrial scars that now double as dramatic scenery for walkers and mountain bikers, with easy access to the narrow-gauge heritage of the Ffestiniog Railway and nearby trails.
Locally the ward retains a strong Welsh-speaking community and a proud slate-mining heritage that feeds both identity and tourism; the wider slate landscape here forms part of the region celebrated for its UNESCO-recognised industrial archaeology. Like many former mining communities, it balances a post-industrial economy with regeneration efforts and small-scale tourism, community projects and an active local culture rooted in chapel, language and local events.
