Cyfarthfa sits on the western edge of Merthyr Tydfil, dominated by the imposing neo-Gothic Cyfarthfa Castle and its extensive public gardens. The castle, built in the early 19th century for the Crawshay ironmasters, and the nearby remnants of the Cyfarthfa Ironworks reflect the area's pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution, with views down to the River Taff and the valley below.
Today the area mixes Victorian housing and later estates, with Cyfarthfa Park serving as a cultural hub - the castle houses a local museum and art collection and the park provides lakes, playgrounds and sports facilities. Economic shifts from heavy industry have left their mark, but there has been steady local regeneration and a strong community interest in heritage, green space and grassroots initiatives.
