Vaynor is a largely rural parish to the north of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, sitting on the eastern fringes of the uplands that lead into the Brecon Beacons and straddling the wooded valleys of the River Taff. It has strong historic links to Merthyr’s 19th‑century iron and coal industries, and you can still see the industrial imprint in old rail lines and stone structures such as the striking viaduct at Cefn-coed-y-cymmer.
Today Vaynor combines farming and commuter households with pockets of heritage tourism and outdoor recreation; nearby trails, reservoirs and historic sites attract walkers and those interested in industrial archaeology. Community life remains centred on small villages and chapels, giving the area a distinctive mix of rural character and industrial heritage.
