Aberdare East is a community in Rhondda Cynon Taf occupying the eastern part of the town of Aberdare in the heart of the Cynon Valley. Set along the River Cynon and backed by upland moors, it sits close to the western fringes of the Brecon Beacons, so the landscape mixes compact Victorian terraces with nearby open moorland and reservoirs. The area’s character was shaped by the 19th‑century coal and iron boom, leaving a legacy of industrial archaeology and period civic buildings.
Today the community has a strong local identity, with active sports clubs, chapel and community groups, and a shift in the local economy from heavy industry to retail, public services and commuting into Cardiff and nearby towns. Regeneration and heritage projects have focused on preserving the town’s Victorian streetscape and celebrating its mining and social history, while emphasising amenities and green space for residents.
