Gilwern is a small village in Monmouthshire, Wales, sited where the River Usk meets the River Clydach and alongside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. Its location close to Abergavenny and the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park gives it attractive river- and hill-side scenery, and makes it a handy base for hill walking and cycling.
Historically the village grew with the canal and local limestone and iron industries, and remnants of the industrial past – former wharves and kiln sites – can still be seen. Today it’s a quiet, community-minded place popular for towpath walks, fishing and waterside pubs, with a mix of residents who commute to nearby towns and those drawn by outdoor recreation and rural life.
