Alway is an east‑side ward and suburb of Newport in south‑east Wales, lying a short distance from the city centre on largely flat ground. The area is predominantly residential, with post‑war council estates alongside later private developments, and sits close to the eastern industrial corridor around Llanwern and the floodplain of the River Usk; major transport links such as the M4 are easily reached, making it well connected for commuting.
Built up in the 20th century as Newport’s heavy industry and docks expanded, Alway has a history tied to local manufacturing employment but today is notable for community‑led regeneration, local schools, shops and neighbourhood centres. The ward has a mixed, diverse population and active community groups working on housing, green space and social projects, giving it a strong local identity despite economic change.
