Llanwern is a village and community on the eastern edge of Newport in Wales, set largely on the floodplain of the River Usk and adjacent to the reedbeds and birdlife of the Newport Wetlands nature reserve. It retains a rural feel in parts, with lanes, scattered farms and a small historic nucleus that contrasts with the more recent changes around it.
During the mid‑20th century the area became better known for the large Llanwern Steelworks, which reshaped the local economy and landscape; in recent years much of the former industrial land has been redeveloped as the mixed‑use Glan Llyn scheme, bringing new housing and amenities. With good road links via the M4 and proximity to Newport and Cardiff, Llanwern now mixes industrial heritage, wildlife interest and growing commuter‑friendly communities.
