Gaer is a residential electoral ward in western Newport, Wales, sitting on a ridge that looks over parts of the city. The area is anchored by Gaer Park and the earthworks of an ancient hillfort often called The Gaer, which gives the neighbourhood some striking green space and fine views across the valley.
Traditionally a working‑class community with ties to South Wales’s coal and steel industries, Gaer today is a mix of post‑war council housing, terraces and newer homes, with local shops, a primary school and active community groups. Its combination of greenery, visible heritage and a strong local identity makes it a quietly distinctive part of Newport.
