Carreghofa is a small, largely rural parish in Powys on the England–Wales border, centred around the village of Llanymynech which famously straddles the frontier. The landscape is an attractive mix of pasture, limestone outcrops and remnants of industrial archaeology: old limekilns, quarries and canal and railway earthworks hint at a once-thriving local lime and transport economy, while the nearby Montgomery Canal and sections of Offa's Dyke country add appeal for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Historically the area sits in a contested borderland with medieval earthworks and the site of Carreghofa Castle reflecting its turbulent past. Today the parish economy is dominated by agriculture, small local businesses and a modest tourism trade centred on outdoor recreation and industrial heritage; socially it retains a close-knit, bilingual character typical of border communities, with village halls, pubs and local events playing an important role.
