Llanwrtyd Wells is a small upland spa town in Powys, Wales, set on the banks of the River Irfon and fringed by the rolling moors of the Cambrian Mountains. It grew in the 19th century as a Victorian spa resort around sulphurous springs, and remains a compact place with fewer than a thousand residents and a scatter of period buildings that hint at that spa-era past.
Today the town is best known for its quirky events and outdoor appeal - it hosts the original Man versus Horse Marathon and the famous World Bog Snorkelling competition - and the local economy depends largely on tourism, walking, fishing and small-scale rural services. Despite its remoteness it has a lively community feel, a couple of pubs and B&Bs, and a reputation for embracing the oddball festival as a way of drawing visitors to the hills.
