Llanfair-ar-y-bryn is a small, largely rural community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, set among rolling uplands and pasture that look down towards the upper reaches of the River Towy. The name - literally “St Mary on the hill” - reflects the siting of the parish church and the scattered nature of settlements: stone farmhouses, lanes and occasional hamlets rather than a single large village, which makes it popular with walkers and those after quiet countryside near the Cambrian Mountains and Brecon Beacons.
Historically the area sits on old droving and rural routes and retains a strong agricultural character, dominated by sheep and cattle farming, with local chapels and community halls at its social heart. Welsh language and traditions remain important locally, and modest levels of tourism and conservation work help sustain the local economy while preserving the vernacular architecture and landscape.
