Ystalyfera is a former industrial village in Neath Port Talbot, set high in the upper Swansea Valley beside the River Tawe. It sits against steep hills and open moorland that lead towards the Brecon Beacons, giving easy access to walking and mountain scenery while still feeling distinctly valley‑side in character.
The village grew in the 19th century with coal, iron and tinplate works and, after industrial decline, has become a compact, community‑centred place with local shops, a strong rugby club and chapel and choral traditions. Many residents now commute to nearby towns such as Swansea and Neath, and there remains an active interest in outdoor recreation and Welsh cultural life.
