Welshpool sits in the county of Powys in mid-Wales, lying on the banks of the River Severn close to the English border with Shropshire. Historically part of Montgomeryshire, it developed as a market town with medieval roots and a compact town centre that still reflects its commercial past.
The area is notable for Powis Castle and its gardens, the restored stretch of the Montgomery Canal and the heritage Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, all of which boost tourism alongside a local economy based on agriculture, livestock markets and light industry. Social life is shaped by market days, seasonal fairs and a mixed Welsh–English cultural identity typical of the border counties.
