Great Houghton is a small former coal‑mining village on the eastern side of the metropolitan borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, set in the low-lying Dearne Valley. It grew up around the local pits in the 19th and 20th centuries and still shows that heritage in its terraces and memorials, while reclaimed spoil tips and green corridors now offer pleasant walks and views across the valley.
Today the village keeps a strong local identity with a village hall, a few pubs and small shops, and a mix of long‑standing families and commuters travelling to nearby centres such as Sheffield and Leeds. Community projects and events tend to celebrate the mining past even as the area adapts to new economic realities, making Great Houghton a compact, characterful place between industry and countryside.
