Great Houghton is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it developed as a coal‑mining community in the Dearne Valley and still carries that industrial heritage in its terraces, social clubs and local character; it lies within easy reach of Barnsley town centre and cities such as Sheffield and Rotherham.
Since the pit closures the area has become largely residential with some light industry and commuter links, while local regeneration has emphasised green corridors, reclaimed landscapes and walking routes through the Dearne Valley. Community life remains lively for a village of its size, centred on sporting clubs, village facilities and a sense of shared history rooted in the mining era.
