Darfield is a former coal‑mining village on the edge of the Dearne Valley, in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It grew rapidly in the 19th century around pits and rail links and still shows that industrial heritage in its terraces and street plan, while many former colliery sites have been reclaimed as green spaces beside the River Dearne.
Today Darfield feels like a close‑knit commuter community with local shops, pubs and community groups, benefitting from good road and rail links to Barnsley, Sheffield and Doncaster, and easy access to the M1. Regeneration in the Dearne Valley has brought new housing and leisure routes, so the village mixes its working‑class past with quieter semi‑rural living.
