North East is a ward to the north‑east of the town centre within the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It blends older terrace housing from the coal‑mining era with more recent suburban developments and benefits from nearby green spaces and easy road links towards the Pennine foothills.
Historically shaped by mining and local industry, the area retains a strong community identity with active sports clubs, community centres and traditional pubs. Since the pit closures its economy has shifted towards services and commuting to nearby cities such as Sheffield and Leeds, and there have been steady regeneration efforts alongside persistent social challenges in parts of the ward.
