St. Helens is a ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, made up of a mix of terraced streets, post‑war estates and semi‑rural fringes just outside the town centre. It sits within reasonable commuting distance of Leeds and Sheffield and includes a number of green spaces and reclaimed colliery land used for recreation.
The area’s character is rooted in Barnsley’s industrial past - coal mining and local manufacturing - and that legacy shows in a strong community spirit, local sports clubs and active community centres. Economically the ward has shifted towards retail, light industry and commuting, and like many former mining communities it combines proud local traditions with ongoing regeneration efforts and social challenges.
