Cudworth and Shafton are neighbouring former mining villages in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Both grew up in the 19th and early 20th centuries around coal and the railways, and that industrial past is still visible in terraced streets, miners’ welfare clubs and local memorials; they sit on the edge of the South Yorkshire coalfield with countryside and the Pennines within easy reach.
Today they are primarily residential communities with schools, shops, sports clubs and community centres, and have seen pockets of regeneration alongside long‑standing social networks. Good road and bus links to Barnsley and the wider region make them practical commuter bases while they retain a distinct local identity shaped by their mining heritage.
