Cudworth is a ward and large former mining village in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, lying a few miles to the north‑east of the town centre. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the area mixes traditional terraced streets with pockets of newer housing and sits amid remnants of former colliery land and local green spaces.
The community’s identity was shaped by coal mining through the 19th and 20th centuries, and that heritage survives in local clubs, memorials and community events. Since pit closures the local economy has shifted towards service jobs and commuting, with many residents travelling to Barnsley, Sheffield and Leeds, while shops, schools and sports teams continue to provide a strong village feel.
