Royston is a residential suburb on the southern edge of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, originally a village that expanded during the 19th‑century coal boom. It lies within easy reach of the town centre and has good road links to nearby centres such as Sheffield and Wakefield, with the Pennine hills and surrounding countryside not far away.
The area still shows its mining heritage in street patterns and housing, though much of the local economy is now residential and service‑based, supported by shops, schools and community groups. Former pit sites and terraces have often been softened by green space and footpaths along the River Dearne corridor, and ongoing borough regeneration has brought investment into community facilities and transport.
