East Saltdean sits on the coast in the district of Lewes, East Sussex, England, tucked between Saltdean and Peacehaven at the foot of the South Downs. The village has the low chalk cliffs and pebble shore typical of this stretch of coast and offers wide views across the English Channel; nearby the 1930s Art Deco Saltdean Lido is a local landmark.
Originally centred on fishing and small-scale agriculture, it developed mainly in the 20th century and today is a quiet, largely residential community with some small shops, holiday accommodation and easy commuter links into Brighton and surrounding towns. Its close access to the coastal path and the South Downs makes it popular with walkers and birdwatchers, and local life tends to be low-key with a strong community feel rather than a busy tourist scene.
