Hartcliffe and Withywood sit on a largely residential ridge in the south of Bristol, roughly five miles from the city centre. The area was carved out of former farmland in the mid-20th century as large council-built estates and still contains pockets of green space and playing fields; on clear days the higher ground can give long views towards Avonmouth and the Severn Estuary.
There is a strong local community spirit, with many grassroots groups and voluntary projects focused on youth work, health and regeneration. Like much of South Bristol the neighbourhood has faced economic and social challenges, including periods of higher unemployment and deprivation, but ongoing investment in housing, community facilities and local shopping parades alongside decent bus links to the city keep a lively pattern of local activity and change.
