Todmorden sits in the upper valley of the River Calder within the metropolitan borough of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, fringed by the rolling moors of the Pennines. Historically a booming textile and mill town, its steep valley streets and stone terraces still reflect that industrial past, with canals and the railway line linking it to Manchester and Bradford and small modern businesses and tourism now forming much of the local economy.
The town is known for a lively community spirit - most famously the grassroots Incredible Edible movement that began here - and a strong arts and independent retail scene centred on the long‑running market. Landmarks such as Stoodley Pike and nearby hamlets like Walsden give a distinct rural feel, making it a place where industrial heritage, community activism and Pennine scenery meet.
