Mepal is a small fenland village in East Cambridgeshire, Cambridgeshire, England, set amid the low-lying washlands between the Old Bedford River and the Ouse Washes. Its setting is defined by drained peat soils, pumping stations and flood-management earthworks, and it sits within easy reach of the cathedral city of Ely and the university city of Cambridge.
The local economy is largely agricultural, with arable farming dominating, but the area is also valued for wildlife and birdwatching - the Ouse Washes and nearby WWT Welney attract wintering waterfowl. Mepal retains a village social life centred on a hall and local pub, and its landscape bears reminders of 20th-century history, not least the nearby wartime airfield sites that are part of the community’s collective memory.
