Whittlesey is a small market town in the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire, England, lying on the edge of the Fens near the River Nene and a few miles east of Peterborough. Sitting where slightly higher ground meets reclaimed fenland, it grew from medieval origins when meres and peatlands dominated the landscape; much of its character reflects the drainage and agricultural reclamation that turned the area into rich arable countryside.
Today Whittlesey remains a local service and farming centre with a regular market, food-processing businesses and good commuter links to Peterborough. It is best known culturally for the traditional Straw Bear festival, a revived custom in which a straw-clad figure parades through the streets each January, and for its sizeable parish church of St Mary, giving the town a mix of historic interest and active community life.
